Orphan of War

Disclaimer: I do not own Biker Mice from Mars. I only own the characters of Monterey, Razr, Naya, and Kawasaki. Any minor plutarkians/martians are just add-in charries with no characterization unless otherwise noted.

Heavy booted feet trudged over the burnt and crumbled remains of the city of Oxide. As he stepped into a small ... well, what had once been a small house, he could hear the weight of his booted feet causing the floorboards to creak. Smoke still spiraled up from the burnt rubble. Death and destruction, and yet more death still. he sighed silently to himself as he kicked away some rubble from the martian home that had just been leveled by his fellow soldiers. He couldn’t tell them that he was opposed to the Plutarkian invasion ... such an act would mean immediate death, and he had a wife and son back home on Plutark to think about. Sad orange eyes scanned the home and fell to rest on the dead corpses of a martian couple. he frowned, they couldn’t have been more than 24 years old.

”Hey Monterey!” one of the other Plutarkians called, taking a couple of steps towards him. The Plutarkian known as Monterey glanced over at him. “We gotta go report to the colonel that the attack was a success, the city of Oxide is ours!” he beamed gleefully, dangerously.

”yeah, I’ll be there in a few minutes.” he called back. His partner raised an eyebrow, but shrugged it off and turned, jogging back to the others in the group that had just stormed the small town and all but leveled it. Monterey could hear the dune buggies leaving, leaving him there alone. He jammed his hands into the pockets of his pants, and turned to leave... but a noise stopped him. Was that ... crying? he blinked and glanced over his shoulder to the left, towards the sound that reached his ears. It sounded like an infant crying! But ... there were no survivors of this attack ... that was impossible. Still, he had to investigate, and cautiously stepped towards the sound, pulling a blaster in case he had to use it. He reached where there had once been a small room, and looked down when he realized the sound was coming from beneath him. Frowning, he knelt down and brushed a gloved hand over the floor, scattering dust and ash ... and revealing a trap door. What the- he wondered as he grasped the handle firmly, heaving upwards until the door fell open with a creak, and a crash as it dropped backwards, revealing the opening to a secret compartment that had been built beneath the small home. He blinked, and rubbed his eyes, then blinked again to clear any dust and ash particles that might be responsible for his OBVIOUSLY impaired vision. As he reached down to touch the wriggling, crying bundle, though ... he knew he wasn’t imagining it or seeing things. His vision wasn’t impaired ... a single survivor of the attack was laying in this little secret compartment, crying his lungs out.

”Sshhhh ... shh...” he whispered, trying to gently coax the martian infant to stop crying as he reached in and pulled the child out of it’s hiding place, holding the small body close. a bi of ash smudged his face, and Monterey carefully brushed it away. Peering down into those large, almond-shaped eyes, he couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness and guilt. How many lives had to be lost ... Martian and Plutarkian alike ... for the sake of this foolish war? It was after all, his people’s own fault that they needed more natural resources. He rocked the infant gently and soon realized that the child had stopped crying ... and those big light blue eyes were staring back up at him curiously. “Now what am I gonna do?” He wondered aloud with a heavy sigh as he looked around at he littered remains of houses and buildings and dead bodies.

To be Continued.

yes, Monterey and his family are opposed to the Plutarkian invasion, moreso after Montery lost his brother in the war. But if he were to defect or to oppose it openly, he'd be killed for treason, and he doesn't even want to think about what would happen to his family.

Um, try reading the story for the content. I have never seen war of the worlds, and that really wasn't the point of posting this fic. It is NOT finished by any means, so please save your comments unless they are constructive in some way. thank you.

My Dear nightbeat,

The end of the war of the worlds goes like this: "... and the black birds were pecking and tearing pieces of brown flesh... from their dead bodies..." Kind of like who your story ends
