In this challenge, there are a few guidelines - moreso then other challenges. THERE IS ALSO A PRIZE.
1. Create a 1 or 2 page comic that has between 3-6 panels per page. This means no splash pages.
2. It must be BMFM-related. You can use new characters or the established characters.
3. NO WORDS. You are an artist. Tell the story through pictures ONLY. You can have sound effects (ex. guns shooting, engines, rocks falling, etc).
4. Unless you are from Japan or something, most of us read left to right and from top to bottom. Make sure we can follow your panel structure. If you need help, look up comic book pages on google or yahoo image search.
5. If you want a critique type 'Critique' into the body of your post and I'll critique your stuff. You might get others critiquing your work too. I'll be straight up honest with you. I do promise to tell you something good, but I'll point out what you need to work on too.
6. TIME LIMIT - You have until September 30, 2007 to post your stuff here. That'll give you a months time to get 2 pages done. The pros can get 22-pages drawn in a month, so no complaining.
PRIZES - There will be a voting period after Sept. 30, 2007. Thanks to Criterion we have some actual prizes.
WINNER - An autographed Biker Mice From Mars poster and a BMFM ps2 game.
RUNNER UP - A BMFM ps2 game.
*When I have more prize details, I'll update this. Until then, be patient.*
IDEAS - If you get stuck on what to draw, ask around. Maybe someone can help you come up with something. Here are three fall backs if you need some help though:
1. The guys are fighting Limburger/Cataclysm.
2. The introduction of a new villian.
3. The guys are trying to stop Stoker who is in rat form.
TIPS:
1. Real comics are drawn on 10"x15" paper, then reduced by 67%. This allows the artist to draw more detail.
2. Not all comics have to be colored, but you could always throw yours into the color book section of the forum.
3. If you're not using india ink for inking, sharpies work well in covering large areas while tech pens work well for the smaller lines.
Yep. No speaking, no captions, only sound effects. In school we used to have a bunch of assignments like this, usually three pagers and they were due the next week.
Well, the prizes look interesting, thought I already have the PS2 game...
Anyway, what's the maxium violence raiting to the comics?
Are all of us Red Planeteers going to be doing the voting, London?
If so, might it be a good idea if all the contestants forwarded their entries in to you rather than just posting them here themselves?
That way, you can keep all the entries 'under wraps' till after the closing date. And you can post them without the artists' names appearing, so us voters won't know for sure whose is whose.
I will be finding a way to make the polls work for voting on the competitions, in the meantime MamaJ's suggestion is an excellent one :)
This looks promising, I'll look forward to this little challenge! ^^
Let's keep the rating between G and R. We don't need porn comics or anything like that around here.
Voting....we'll get something worked out. No one votes on anything until AFTER September 30th.
I'm getting my stuff started today. Who else is going to draw something?
I have a cute & funny idea, but ye gods, I haven't picked up a pencil since... (counts on her fingers) 1994? And I'm thoroughly intimidated by the quality of artwork around here.
You should go for it! You might surprise yourself and us! It can't hurt, right?
If you really go blank and can't think of something yourself, you can always use these actual BMFM scripts - pick a scene draw it out as best as you can over two pages.
Um, I dug out what little of my art stuff I have here at my apartment and started messing around with sketching, and have come to the horrified conclusion that sometime in the last 13 years I've pretty much forgotten HOW TO DRAW. Who knew? Also forgotten that drawing line art with a mouse pretty much sucks. Would any of you arty types mind some preliminary beta-ing for me? I think I need some feedback. (I also need to find the power cable for my scanner and hook it back up.)
P.S. If this is too off-topic, feel free to delete it.
P.P.S. And I need to buy an art pen to hook up to my computer. Any reccomendations? (My Adobe Illustrator is version 10.0.3 and my Photoshop is version 7.0, if that matters. I want Adobe CS3, but I'm currently a student and, y'know, poor.)
Wacom Graphire, good quality on a budget. And post anything you want beta'd in the Art Class forum.
I have mine finished.
So the anonymity/ post-all-together-at-the-closing-date idea sucks, then? ;) :P
Well, you have until Sept. 30th to post your pieces. Personally I just like to get my work done, then I don't have to worry about it later.
I started at noon, ended by about 5-ish. So it's not like two pages is a whole lot of work.
I liked it, but not phased.
Darn, and I wanted to do some hardcore pr0n. *laughs* I'm kidding, of course.
A minor question: Can props have wording on them or not? I don't mean Wile E. Coyote signs, it wouldn't be dialogue. (And I don't want to say -what- it is because it's part of the 'story'...although how much story can be crammed on two pages is debatable.)
Yeah, of course. Buttons can say 'Emergency Stop' or whatever....yeah. That's fine. Just no dialogue...aka nothing that comes from a person's mouth - though I'd allow your basic, run of the mill scream 'Aaaahhhhh' or a grunt or a groan or a sigh because they aren't really dialogue.
Ah OK. :) I'll go ahead and do the two different ones I had in mind. Just in case the first is unsuitable...I'm not making two entries, just two -possible- entries.
That's a good point. Limiting to one entry per person?
Sure. I never really thought about it being an issue.
One entry per person!
Only 24 days left!
Not much time left! Hurry and submit your stuff!!!
13 Days Left! If I'm the only one who's going to participate, we'll just have to cancel the contest due to lack of interest.
C'mon guys. It's not that hard.
Ummm... London, could you relax a tad about this? It's hardly fair to set a deadline and then tell us you'll cancel the competition when stuff's not submitted 13 days before it.
If the closing date's 30 September, then that's when people need to get their stuff in by.
And if no one else enters, you're a surefire winner (assuming no one else has sent one in since I saw your entry.) So it's all good, really...
I'd love to enter but I'm like, um, uber new here and found out about it too late...drawing I like, but I've never tried cartoon strip type stuff before so it would be totally new to me. I'm looking forward to seeing people's entries and maybe (that's a big maybe...I've got to try out this drawing thing, its been a long long while so I'll be breaking myself in gently) I might enter if the competition gets rerun at some point in the future :)
Still working on finding me an Avatar I like...will introduce myself all proper like soon, once I've got my stuff in order ;)
Looking forward to hanging out on the forum :)
Stubby
I'm still working on mine.
With RL work and other commitments, such a thing will end up falling by the wayside for a while.
I gotta second MamaJ...you're probably going to end up freaking people out and they'll just quit. It's just a fun sort of contest, not a project with a hard deadline that you'll lose your job over.
(The wonderful difference between pros and 'non-pros'...though I don't see a difference sometimes other than one of 'em gets paid. People put down self-taught folk too damn much.)
Stubby (and welcome to Red Planet, by the way!)... why not give the competition a go? I don't think most of us have any comic-creating experience, and if you like drawing, you could probably have some fun playing around with ideas.
:-)
Unfortunately at the moment I'm working on an art exhibition so my free (non working) time is a bit taken over with that, but I'm planning on having a go at some Biker Mice pics when things calm down a little, unfortunately I'll have missed the competition deadline by then...It'll be fun to see you folks' entries though. Hopefully they'll give me some inspiration. I've not drawn anything cartoon based for many many years :) And its also been a long time since I wrote any fic, but I think its time to get my toes wet again.
By the way, when I say 'Art Exhibition' its actually just me filling some display space where I work, I'm not a 'real' artist :)
P.S. - meant to say, Thanks for the welcome :D

Clarifying - no words means no dialogue and captions either?
"You ride the waves and don't ask where they go."
